Holy Family

The Holy Family refers to Jesus Christ, his mother the Virgin Mary, and his Saint Joseph. This term is used mainly within Catholic tradition, and sometimes within Protestantism and Eastern Christianity. Pope Francis has said that the holy family can also be a model for modern day society, which he believes is often too focused on individualism. He has urged people to look to the example of the Holy Family as a way of rediscovering the importance of community.

Feast of the Holy Family

The Feast of the Holy Family occurs during the season of Chrstmastide and is celebrated on the Sunday between Christmas day and New Years Day. When both are on Sunday, it is celebrated on December 30th. The Feast of the Holy Family is a celebration in honor of Jesus, his mother Mary, and his legal father, Joseph.

Holy Family in Art

The Holy Family is a very popular subject matter for artists dating back to the 16th century. Many Renaissance era paintings depict The Holy Family, with Mary and Joseph holding a newborn Jesus. Nativity scene paintings would also fall under this genre. Although the most famous paintings came out of Italy and Northern Europe, the Holy Family can be seen in famous works of art throughout the world.
