Clergy Apparel Guide: The History of Cassocks

A cassock is a type of clerical clothing, most commonly used by the clergy of the Catholic Church. The origins of the term cassock comes from the Middle French word casaque, which translates to long coat. A traditional cassock is a full-length coat and is often one color, although in some cases there may be color accents such as buttons or a cincture.

Who wears a cassock?

A cassock can be worn by members of the clergy, priests, and in some cases, choir members.

What are the different types of cassocks?

The three most common types of cassocks are Anglican cassocksRoman Cassocks, and choir cassock robes. While there are some similarities between the different types of cassocks, it is important to know what makes each type unique.

Anglian Cassock

The Anglican cassock is very traditional and usually includes two pleats on both the front and the back. While some may wear a cassock with a buckled belt, they are often worn without any cincture. Priests typically wear a black cassock, but white is sometimes worn in warmer locations and other colors may be used by specific cathedrals, although less common.

Roman Cassock

Although the Roman Cassock can come in a number of different styles, the most common version includes an opening down the middle as well as inverted back pleats. The Roman style cassock historically had buttons that could symbolize rank or origin, although more modern cassocks don’t include the buttons. Most Roman style cassocks are worn with the traditional tab collar shirt that is typically seen in the Catholic church.

Interesting Facts About Roman Cassocks

Roman Catholic clergy members commonly wear cassocks. Oftentimes their cassocks contain 33 buttons. The significance of those 33 buttons represent the 33 years of Jesus’ life.

Choir Cassock Robes

Even though each of the different types of cassocks can be ordered in different colors, the choir cassock robe is the type that is most often seen in a different color than the traditional black robe. Another notable distinction is that the choir cassock is oftentimes sleeveless and would be worn with a collar shirt underneath it.
