Our Lady Guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe is an image of Mary that is associated with a series of Marian apparitions.

The Marian Apparitions

On December 12, 1531, a peasant named Juan Diego had a vision of the Virgin Mary near Mexico City. She asked him to build a church in her honor at that site, and she promised that all who prayed there would be answered. Juan Diego took her message to the local bishop, but was initially met with skepticism. However, when he opened his cloak before the bishop, an image of the Virgin Mary was miraculously emblazoned on the fabric. This image became known as Our Lady of Guadalupe, and it remains a powerful symbol of faith for Catholics around the world.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Portrayal

Our Lady of Guadalupe is often portrayed wearing a blue mantle and a green gown, which are both symbols of hope. Her image is also said to have miraculous healing powers, and she is venerated as the patron saint of the Americas. Millions of pilgrims visit her shrine in Mexico City each year, and December 12th is celebrated as a national holiday in Mexico.

Canonization

On February 8, 1887 Pope Leo XIII granted the image a decree of canonical coronation. It was then politically crowned on October 12, 1895. Visitors can view the original tilma of Juan Diego where it hangs above the high altar of the Guadalupe Basilica.
