Saint John the Baptist
April 20, 2022Saint John the Baptist is a Christian saint who is revered as a prophet and forerunner of Jesus Christ. He is said to have baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. He has also been celebrated for his preaching and asceticism.
According to the Bible, Saint John the Baptist was born to Zachariah and Elizabeth, who were both elderly and childless. One day, an angel visited Zachariah and told him that his wife would give birth to a son, whom they were to name John. When John was born, he was circumcised on the eighth day and named according to the angel’s instructions. The birth of John is often compared to the birth of Jesus because the birth was proclaimed by angels.
John’s Ministry Practice
Saint John the Baptist started preaching after he had a vision from God. In this vision, he was told to start preaching in the wilderness and baptizing people. He did as he was instructed and began his public ministry in the region of Judea and started to gain a following of people who were interested in his message. The primary theme of John the Baptist's ministry was that Jesus Christ was the Messiah and that people needed to repent of their sins in order to be saved. He also preached about baptism as a way to cleanse oneself of sin.
Saint John the Baptist Meets Jesus
There are several accounts in the Bible of how Saint John the Baptist and Jesus Christ met, but the most common one is found in the Gospel of Luke. The story goes that John was baptizing people in the Jordan River when he saw Jesus coming towards him. John immediately recognized Jesus as the Messiah and proclaimed him as such.
John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. It is said that when John was baptizing Jesus, the Holy Spirit descended on him in the form of a dove.
Becoming Saint John the Baptist
John the Baptist was canonized in the year 324 by Pope Sylvester I andbecame a saint because he was a righteous man who dedicated his life to God. He is also venerated by Christians because he was the one who baptized Jesus Christ.
