Other Great Easter Worship Service Ideas

Preparing for your big Easter worship service goes beyond ordering the right vestment and parament supplies. Below are some great ideas to help you prepare and have the most succesful Easter service possible.

Announce Your Easter Service Schedule

Easter is one of those times of year that churches can expect to have more people attending their services than a typical Sunday. For this reason, churches will often have addiitonal services scheduled due to larger turnouts or because the services will take longer than your normal Sunday service. In advance, notify your congregation and the general public about your entire Easter service schedule, including anything that is happening during Holy Week. Put these schedule announcements on your church website, social media, email list, outdoor signage, and include the details in your church bulletin for several weeks leading up to the service.

Make a Plan for Additional Seating if Necessary

Since Easter services often bring in larger turnouts to services than normal, you'll want to make sure you are prepared with additional seating options if necessary. Some churches will bring in temporary seating to place in the back if they are anticipating a larger turnout.

Review Past Easter Services

Take a moment to reflect on some of your past Easter services. What do you think people enjoyed the most about them? What made that service memorable? Then think about and start planning your service for this year. Ideally, you want to have a service that is special, memorable, and unique from past years - all while keeping the Easter message front and center. Gaspard has great resources about the History of Easter and the Meaning of Ash Wednesday.

Decorate the Sanctuary for Easter

In the weeks leading up to Easter, spend some time looking around your sanctuary and accounting for all the areas you may want to incorporate Easter or Holy Week decorations. We recommend doing this sometime when the sanctuary is empty so there are no distractions and you can really focus on the room. When you are looking around, make a list of all of your ideas. Then look through what parament sets you have and other decorations available. Do this early enough that you have time to order any decorations that you may not have on-hand already. When it comes time to actually do the decorating, make sure that you have some help for safety purposes. Plus it is more fun when working with others!

Coordinating Clergy Attire with the Liturgical Colors and Themes of Easter

You'll want to make sure that all chasubles, stoles, and robes resonate with the symbolism and colors of Easter. As a remidner, for Easter you should use white for purity and resurrection and gold for glory and celebration. You can always refer to our Liturgical Color Guide for reference to Easter and all other holidays. When you coordinate the clerical attire with the liturgical colors and themes of Easter, clergy members visually enhance the worship experience.
